He volunteered and was accepted Artillerie Regiment 36 (36 Inf Div) in 1938.
He served in the R.A.D in 1938 in Mainz, Germany.

His unit was armed with heavy, 10cm Cannons. Fought in France then in Russia (Northern Sector)
